'CRAZY FOR YOU'
On 12-15th May 2010, BOST will be performing the new Gershwin Musical 'Crazy For You', at the Liverpool Empire Theatre!
A “new” Gershwin musical… How can that be?
Gershwin’s hit Broadway show Girl Crazy opened in 1930, with George Gershwin himself conducting the orchestra, and a certain Fred Astaire as choreographer. Loaded with many of the hit songs penned by George and Ira, the musical ran for close on 300 performances and springboarded the newly-discovered Ginger Rogers and Ethel Merman to overnight fame in the lead roles. As if that wasn’t enough, the orchestra included two other talents waiting to burst upon the public: Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey.
The popularity of Girl Crazy was such that the stage show was adapted for film no fewer than 3 times: in 1932, 1943 and 1965.
In 1988, nearly 60 years after its Broadway debut, a Dallas millionaire determined to acquire all the rights to his favourite show and other Gershwin songs, with the intention of reworking the musical. The makeover included a new plot linking many of the original songs and integrating others, introduced new characters and was reborn under a fresh, new name . In 1992, Crazy for You opened on Broadway and was proclaimed “a masterpiece” by the critics. Over 1,600 performances later, the 4-year run ended, having won 10 awards, including the Tony for Best Musical. 1993 saw the opening of the West End production starring Ruthie Henshall, which ran just shy of 3 years, winning the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Musical.
Now, in 2010, BOST is adding this “new Gershwin musical” to its repertoire. Containing comedy, romance and mistaken identities, all woven around show-stopping musical numbers, we are confident our audiences will be delighted with our choice.
